Tunisia works to form new government amid tension

Tunis, Tunisia (CNN) -- Tunisian officials scrambled to form new leadership Sunday as military tanks patrolled the streets days after enraged protesters ousted the nation's authoritarian leader.
Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi was meeting with opposition leaders, who want a major role in the unity government, Mustapha Ben Jafar, top opposition official, told CNN.
A unity government may be announced Sunday or Monday, Jafar said, who added that the opposition does not want to be a cover-up for the ruling party, but is aiming for an active role in running Tunisia.
"The most important thing for me is to build during this period the basis for a democratic Tunis where all the citizens participate and where we can build a civic society -- this I what I spent 40 years of my life working for," Jafar said.

As officials met in the capital, Tunis, police arrested more people, including looters and some of the deposed president's relatives.
Imed Trabelsi, the nephew of the ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, was detained along with 23 other relatives, state-run Tunis TV reported.
The head of Ben Ali's security was also arrested, according to Tunis TV.
Tunisians have been protesting for days over what they consider poor living conditions, high unemployment, government corruption and repression.
Citizens called for the ouster of Ben Ali, who fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday after ruling the country for 23 years.
The wave of rallies was stirred by the suicide of an unemployed college graduate, who torched himself last month after police confiscated his fruit cart, cutting off his source of income.
Tensions remained high Sunday as Tunisians armed with sticks and knives formed groups to guard their neighborhoods. They stopped suspicious cars near their homes, saying security forces did not have the manpower to guard the suburbs.
A French photojournalist was killed in Tunis Sunday morning, according to his uncle, who said Lucas Mebrouk Dolega "was dedicated to his career and he was always very brave."
"He was at the heart of major events happening around the world," Hamid Lhorri told CNN, though he did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his nephew's death.
Despite the instability, there was a glimmer of good news.
Tunisians experienced newfound freedoms online as the acting president, Fouad Mebazaa, took over Saturday. The former parliamentary speaker promised to restore stability and respect the constitution of the north African country, words echoed by the opposition's Jafar.
"We will be loyal to this noble people and youth that put fear aside and went down to the streets asking for reforms we have been asking the government for during the past 20 years since Ben Ali assumed power," Jafar said.
Filters on social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube, put in place under Ben Ali, were dropped.
Internet speed picked up considerably -- a development that followed the new government's vow to ease restrictions on freedoms.
Some top regional officials remained wary as protests swept over the nation, with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi saying he was "sad and hurt" by the developments. He blamed the unrest on criminal gangs.
"Sadly, Tunisia is headed to more chaos, and we do not know how it will end," he said. "I hope your sanity returns and your wounds heal, because you had a big loss that will never return."
Tunisian state TV reported that officials plan to hold presidential elections in 60 days.
The pro-Western nation supports U.S. policy in the Middle East and its efforts against terrorism. President Barack Obama has condemned the use of force on protesters and called for free and fair elections.

France's National Front picks Marine Le Pen as new head

France's far-right National Front has named Marine Le Pen as its new leader at a party conference.

She is succeeding her father Jean-Marie Le Pen, who founded the FN in 1972.

On Saturday party sources reported that she had secured two-thirds of votes against rival Bruno Gollnisch in a recent referendum of members.

The anti-immigrant FN has been shunned by France's main parties, but Ms Le Pen has said she wants to break with the party's xenophobic image.

In a combative farewell speech on Saturday Mr Le Pen, 82, insisted that "unceasing immigration" posed a threat to France.

"All my comments were distorted from their true meaning... because I refused to submit to the dictatorship of the thought police," he told cheering supporters at the conference in the central city of Tours.

He added that it was up to FN members to ensure the party's future success under a new leader.

"I entrust you with the destiny of our movement... its unity, its pugnacity," he said.

French TV footage showed Marine Le Pen, 42, crying as she applauded her father.

Although Mr Le Pen's five presidential bids have failed, the FN has steadily grown under his leadership.

In recent elections the party has been able to garner about 15% of the vote.

In 2002 he came a shock second in the first round of presidential elections, but lost the second round to then-incumbent Jacques Chirac.

A recent poll suggested the party could come third in presidential elections to be held in 2012.

The French lobby group SOS Racisme said Ms Le Pen's election at the head of the National Front would not change the nature of the party, and that its "hate speech" would continue.

Tunisia seeks to form unity cabinet after Ben Ali fall

Tunisian political leaders have started efforts to fill the power vacuum created by the fall of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali amid mass protests.

Interim leader Foued Mebazaa - who was sworn in on Tuesday - promised to form a unity government.

Two days after Mr Ben Ali's flight, the country appears to be mostly quiet. A night time curfew has been eased.

The previous 24 hours had seen widespread violence, including looting, arson and deadly jail riots.

Officials say the head of Mr Ben Ali's presidential guard, Ali Seriati, has been arrested, accused of fomenting the violence and plotting against national security.

A state of emergency remains in force and there is very little economic activity. Schools, government offices and most shops are closed.

Election demand

The BBC's Adam Mynott in Tunis says the immediate future of the country, thrown into unprecedented turmoil, is in the hands of the military.

Mr Mebazaa, who until Saturday was the Speaker of parliament, has asked Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi to form a national unity government.

"All Tunisians without exception and exclusion must be associated in the political process," Mr Mebazaa said in a televised address.

Opposition leader Najib Chebbi told France's RTL radio that he had held talks with Mr Ghannouchi on Saturday.

Mr Chebbi, who leads the Democratic Progressive Party, said his main demand was that elections should be held "within six or seven months" under international supervision.

Under the present Tunisian constitution a presidential election must be held within 60 days.

Another opposition figure, Ahmed Ben Brahim, head of centre-left Ettajdid (Renewal) party, has also held talk with Mr Ghannouchi - as has Mustafa Ben Jaafar of the Union of Freedom and Labour party, who afterwards called for "real reforms".

Further talks are being held on Sunday.

The exiled head of Tunisia's banned Islamist party, Rached Ghannouchi, said he would return to the country within weeks.

Speaking to the BBC in London, he said Tunisians had got rid of a dictator, but were a long way from bringing down the dictatorship.

Self-defence

On Sunday the interim authorities announced that the curfew was being eased because of the "improving security situation".

Curfew hours - which ran from 1700 (1600GMT) to 0700 (0600GMT) for two nights - will now be between 1800 and 0500.

The centre of Tunis has been sealed off by troops guarding key public buildings.

Residents in some areas have armed themselves with sticks and clubs, forming impromptu militias to protect their homes.

A resident of Nabeul, south of Tunis, Haythem Houissa, told the BBC that he had joined a volunteer group "to help clean up and guard our city".

"The security situation is much better since yesterday," he added.

Some of the recent violence has been blamed on supporters of Mr Ben Ali.

However many attacks appeared to target businesses and buildings connected with the former president and his family.

A hospital source in Tunis told AFP news agency that Imed Trabelsi, the nephew of Mr Ben Ali's powerful wife, had been stabbed to death on Saturday.

Saturday's deadliest incident was in Monastir, about 160km (100 miles) south of Tunis, where fire swept though a prison, killing at least 42 people.

The leader of neighbouring Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, praised Mr Ben Ali, whom he said he still considered the "legal president of Tunisia".

"You have suffered a great loss... There is none better than Zine (Mr Ben Ali) to govern Tunisia," he said in a speech broadcast on state television.

In the past month, protests have swept the country over unemployment, food price rises and corruption. Police used fired on protesters and dozens died.

Mr Ben Ali, who had been in power for 23 years, fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday after the unrest culminated in a giant rally against him.
