Police: Victims inside burned Indiana house had been shot

(CNN) -- Three children and their mother who were found dead inside their partially burned house in southern Indiana had all been shot in the head, police said Saturday, with an internet rant tied to the woman drawing investigators' attention.
Results of a preliminary autopsy, conducted by the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office, released Saturday revealed that Amanda Bennett, 30, had died from a gunshot wound to her head and smoke inhalation.
The same causes of death were listed for her 9-year-old daughter, Katelynn Bennett. Jasmine Abbott -- 14 and also Amanda's biological daughter -- was killed by a gunshot wound to the head, as was the woman's 4-year-old son, Ryan Bennett.
Shortly after 4:20 p.m. Friday, Austin, Indiana, police forced their way into the victims' residence after getting a request from a relative to check on them.
The police officer that went inside noticed that parts of the home had been burned and, after a "quick search," found the four bodies, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.
"This is a very, very tragic situation -- a very sad situation," Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said after the discovery, according to CNN affiliate WAVE.
Authorities subsequently opened what they're calling a "death investigation." They sent the bodies to Louisville, Kentucky, about 36 miles to the south, where the nearest medical examiner is located. They have not named any suspects in the killings.
"We have no reason to believe at this time that the public at large should be scared for their safety," Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin told reporters Saturday.
Police are looking at an internet posting on the "Crothersville Forum," referring to a town near Austin, that mentions the late Amanda Bennett's husband by name. Two posts, both under the heading "Gone Forever," were published online Friday and contained urgent, heated language.
One of the posts reads, in part: "it's time to take the pain away ... you got what u wanted no wife an no kids."
Responding to a query about whether the post may have been written by Amanda Bennett, Goodin said state police detectives are aware of the post and other online posts that might be relevant to the case.
"That is something that has been brought to our attention -- absolutely, it has been," he said.
Deborah Davidson, who works at an elementary school that the two youngest victims attended, described Amanda Bennett as consistently friendly and warm, according to CNN affiliate WLKY.
TamRa Stidham, a high school classmate of Jasmine Abbott's, described Amanda Bennett as an unselfish mother, telling CNN affiliate WAVE, "Anything (her children) wanted, they got if she had the money."
Stidham said, too, that "everybody loved" Jasmine Abbott at Austin High School.
Meanwhile, friends and neighbors in the tight-knit community were distraught at the news.

"I was devastated, and I'm still devastated," Lula Davidson, who knew Amanda Bennett, told WAVE. "It wasn't meant for me to understand, but I would like to understand."

Opposition in Ireland presses for snap elections

Brian Cowen: "I have taken, on my own counsel, the decision to step down" Opposition parties in the Republic of Ireland are calling for a snap general election after PM Brian Cowen quit as leader of his Fianna Fail party.

Mr Cowen resigned under pressure from colleagues over his handling of an economic crisis and party disputes.
But he said he would remain as prime minister until a general election he had previously set for 11 March.
Opposition politicians describe the situation as "farcical", demanding an election in February.
They intend to try and vote him out of office by tabling emergency motions in the Irish parliament, the BBC's Mark Simpson in Dublin reports.
But Mr Cowen will not go without a fight, and is determined to stay in power until mid-March, our correspondent says.
Ratings plummet The prime minister has said the focus of the election should be policy and not personality.

in a week of political crises, Mr Cowen first survived a party leadership vote but was forced to call the election after a bungled cabinet reshuffle.

Mr Cowen faced immediate criticism for his plan to stay on as PM - the first time since 1994 a politician has been prime minister, or Taoiseach, while not leading the main party of government.
Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said it was "simply not tenable" for Mr Cowen to remain in the post.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said that he would back the no-confidence motion in Mr Cowen as PM on Tuesday unless there was a dissolution of parliament.
However, Fine Gael's Michael Noonan also said it would stave off the vote, and help pass a crucial finance bill, if Mr Cowen was prepared to dissolve parliament on Friday and bring the election forward.
Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said: "The government and Fianna Fail are in chaos. Their focus is not on the problems facing the country."
One of Mr Cowen's own Fianna Fail MPs, Charlie O'Connor, also opposed his move.
"I say this with the greatest of respect for Brian Cowen, but what he's just done is pointless and counterproductive."
Criticism of Mr Cowen has intensified this month following revelations he played golf with the former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, Sean FitzPatrick, months before the bank was nationalised to prevent it from collapse. Mr Cowen has denied any wrongdoing.
Mr Cowen has seen his ratings plummet amid Ireland's economic crisis. The country was given a bail-out package by the European Union and International Monetary Fund last year.
'Deep affection' After the tumultuous week, Mr Cowen said: "Taking everything into account, after discussing the matter with my family, I have taken, on my own counsel, the decision to step down."
He added: "I have been in touch with no senior party figures in relation to this decision.

Mr Cowen said he had "deep affection" for the men and women who worked for Fianna Fail and wanted it to be in the best possible position to fight the election campaign.

"The focus should be on what policies the political parties are offering, rather than on the narrow focus of personality politics.
"I am concerned that renewed internal criticism of my leadership of Fianna Fail is deflecting attention from these important debates," Mr Cowen said.
The PM said: "My intention now is to concentrate fully on government business and on continuing to implement the recovery plan.
"The government will continue to govern the country."
He also vowed that the government would win the no-confidence vote on Tuesday. The coalition has a two-seat majority in parliament.
Fianna Fail has confirmed it will choose its new leader on Wednesday. Brian Lenihan, Micheal Martin and Mary Hanafin are among the leading contenders.
Mr Cowen pledged his "full support" for whoever was selected.
On Tuesday, Mr Cowen won a vote of confidence in his leadership of Fianna Fail. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheal Martin, who had opposed Mr Cowen, resigned.
However on Thursday, Mr Cowen bungled a planned government reshuffle. His coalition partners, the Greens, were angered by the reshuffle and blocked it. Mr Cowen then called the general election.

Social Network' scores big at the Golden Globes

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The film "The Social Network" took home four awards Sunday night, including best motion picture - drama, at the Golden Globes.
The television series "Glee" also had a good night with three wins.
Aaron Sorkin accepted the award for best screenplay -motion picture for "The Social Network," which also won the best director award for David Fincher and best original score for a motion picture for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The hit Fox series "Glee" won best television series - comedy or musical while cast members Jane Lynch won for best actress in a supporting role and Chris Colfer accepted the award for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a series, miniseries or motion picture made for television.
"I think I just dropped my heart somewhere between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore," a stunned Colfer said in receiving the award for his performance as gay teen Kurt Hummel on "Glee."
A pregnant Natalie Portman won the best actress in a motion picture-drama award for "Black Swan." She joked about the bit part her fiance, Benjamin Millipied, had in the film in which he says he wouldn't sleep with her character.
"He's the best actor, it's not true, he totally wants to sleep with me," Portman laughed about Millipied, who is the father of her unborn child.
Favored actor Colin Firth received the best actor in a motion picture - drama award for "The King's Speech" while "The Kids Are All Right" won for best motion picture - comedy or musical. Paul Giamatti collected his second career Golden Globe winning best actor in a comedy or musical for "Barney's Version."
Welsh-born actor Christian Bale and actress Melissa Leo won best supporting actor and actress awards for their roles in the same film, boxing movie "The Fighter."
"Batman" and "Dark Knight" star Bale joked that he wasn't really sure who the Globes' organizers -- the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- were, but now recognizes "how wise and perceptive those guys really are."
Steve Buscemi won for best performance by an actor in a television series - drama for his role on the freshman HBO show, "Boardwalk Empire" which also won for best television series - drama.
Robert De Niro was presented with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award. The veteran actor received a standing ovation from the room full of stars. The actor went for the funny, thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for offering him the award before reviewing his latest film, "Little Fockers."
"These movies are like my children," De Niro joked about his body of work. "Except you can't remake my children in 3D to push up the grosses."
"The Big Bang Theory" actor Jim Parsons took home the award for best actor in a TV series - comedy or musical and an absent Laura Linney was awarded best actress in a TV series - comedy or musical for the Showtime original series "The Big C."
Actor Al Pacino won the Globe for best actor in a miniseries or motion picture made for television for his role as Jack Kevorkian in "You Don't Know Jack." Claire Danes was awarded best actress in a miniseries or motion picture made for television for her title role in "Temple Grandin."
Annette Bening received a big congratulatory kiss from husband Warren Beatty after winning the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture - comedy or musical for "The Kids Are All Right."
Bening thanked members of her cast and also sent love "to the 1962 Golden Globe winner for most promising actor, my husband Warren Beatty."
Katey Sagal was awarded the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama series for her role in "Sons of Anarchy." The award for best miniseries or TV movie went to Sundance's "Carlos," and "Toy Story 3" won for best motion picture - animated.
Comedian Ricky Gervais promised to push the envelope of acceptable TV humor in his second year as host of the glitzy dinner party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. And push it he did, remarking that the evening would be "a night of partying and heavy drinking - or what Charlie Sheen calls 'breakfast.' "
Gervais also took shots at "The Tourist," "Sex and the City 2" and others in a opening monologue that elicited some moans and groans from the celebrity crowd.
The red carpet was awash with stars before the show, including an appearance by Michael Douglas who learned last week his treatments for throat cancer were successful.
"I'm feeling great," Douglas told CNN. "I just found out last week that the tumor's gone." The actor received a standing ovation when he handed out the final award of the evening.
The Golden Globes show kicked off the Hollywood awards season Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with 26 trophies handed out by an array of stars, including teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Tunisia works to form new government amid tension

Tunis, Tunisia (CNN) -- Tunisian officials scrambled to form new leadership Sunday as military tanks patrolled the streets days after enraged protesters ousted the nation's authoritarian leader.
Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi was meeting with opposition leaders, who want a major role in the unity government, Mustapha Ben Jafar, top opposition official, told CNN.
A unity government may be announced Sunday or Monday, Jafar said, who added that the opposition does not want to be a cover-up for the ruling party, but is aiming for an active role in running Tunisia.
"The most important thing for me is to build during this period the basis for a democratic Tunis where all the citizens participate and where we can build a civic society -- this I what I spent 40 years of my life working for," Jafar said.

As officials met in the capital, Tunis, police arrested more people, including looters and some of the deposed president's relatives.
Imed Trabelsi, the nephew of the ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, was detained along with 23 other relatives, state-run Tunis TV reported.
The head of Ben Ali's security was also arrested, according to Tunis TV.
Tunisians have been protesting for days over what they consider poor living conditions, high unemployment, government corruption and repression.
Citizens called for the ouster of Ben Ali, who fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday after ruling the country for 23 years.
The wave of rallies was stirred by the suicide of an unemployed college graduate, who torched himself last month after police confiscated his fruit cart, cutting off his source of income.
Tensions remained high Sunday as Tunisians armed with sticks and knives formed groups to guard their neighborhoods. They stopped suspicious cars near their homes, saying security forces did not have the manpower to guard the suburbs.
A French photojournalist was killed in Tunis Sunday morning, according to his uncle, who said Lucas Mebrouk Dolega "was dedicated to his career and he was always very brave."
"He was at the heart of major events happening around the world," Hamid Lhorri told CNN, though he did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his nephew's death.
Despite the instability, there was a glimmer of good news.
Tunisians experienced newfound freedoms online as the acting president, Fouad Mebazaa, took over Saturday. The former parliamentary speaker promised to restore stability and respect the constitution of the north African country, words echoed by the opposition's Jafar.
"We will be loyal to this noble people and youth that put fear aside and went down to the streets asking for reforms we have been asking the government for during the past 20 years since Ben Ali assumed power," Jafar said.
Filters on social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube, put in place under Ben Ali, were dropped.
Internet speed picked up considerably -- a development that followed the new government's vow to ease restrictions on freedoms.
Some top regional officials remained wary as protests swept over the nation, with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi saying he was "sad and hurt" by the developments. He blamed the unrest on criminal gangs.
"Sadly, Tunisia is headed to more chaos, and we do not know how it will end," he said. "I hope your sanity returns and your wounds heal, because you had a big loss that will never return."
Tunisian state TV reported that officials plan to hold presidential elections in 60 days.
The pro-Western nation supports U.S. policy in the Middle East and its efforts against terrorism. President Barack Obama has condemned the use of force on protesters and called for free and fair elections.

France's National Front picks Marine Le Pen as new head

France's far-right National Front has named Marine Le Pen as its new leader at a party conference.

She is succeeding her father Jean-Marie Le Pen, who founded the FN in 1972.

On Saturday party sources reported that she had secured two-thirds of votes against rival Bruno Gollnisch in a recent referendum of members.

The anti-immigrant FN has been shunned by France's main parties, but Ms Le Pen has said she wants to break with the party's xenophobic image.

In a combative farewell speech on Saturday Mr Le Pen, 82, insisted that "unceasing immigration" posed a threat to France.

"All my comments were distorted from their true meaning... because I refused to submit to the dictatorship of the thought police," he told cheering supporters at the conference in the central city of Tours.

He added that it was up to FN members to ensure the party's future success under a new leader.

"I entrust you with the destiny of our movement... its unity, its pugnacity," he said.

French TV footage showed Marine Le Pen, 42, crying as she applauded her father.

Although Mr Le Pen's five presidential bids have failed, the FN has steadily grown under his leadership.

In recent elections the party has been able to garner about 15% of the vote.

In 2002 he came a shock second in the first round of presidential elections, but lost the second round to then-incumbent Jacques Chirac.

A recent poll suggested the party could come third in presidential elections to be held in 2012.

The French lobby group SOS Racisme said Ms Le Pen's election at the head of the National Front would not change the nature of the party, and that its "hate speech" would continue.

Tunisia seeks to form unity cabinet after Ben Ali fall

Tunisian political leaders have started efforts to fill the power vacuum created by the fall of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali amid mass protests.

Interim leader Foued Mebazaa - who was sworn in on Tuesday - promised to form a unity government.

Two days after Mr Ben Ali's flight, the country appears to be mostly quiet. A night time curfew has been eased.

The previous 24 hours had seen widespread violence, including looting, arson and deadly jail riots.

Officials say the head of Mr Ben Ali's presidential guard, Ali Seriati, has been arrested, accused of fomenting the violence and plotting against national security.

A state of emergency remains in force and there is very little economic activity. Schools, government offices and most shops are closed.

Election demand

The BBC's Adam Mynott in Tunis says the immediate future of the country, thrown into unprecedented turmoil, is in the hands of the military.

Mr Mebazaa, who until Saturday was the Speaker of parliament, has asked Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi to form a national unity government.

"All Tunisians without exception and exclusion must be associated in the political process," Mr Mebazaa said in a televised address.

Opposition leader Najib Chebbi told France's RTL radio that he had held talks with Mr Ghannouchi on Saturday.

Mr Chebbi, who leads the Democratic Progressive Party, said his main demand was that elections should be held "within six or seven months" under international supervision.

Under the present Tunisian constitution a presidential election must be held within 60 days.

Another opposition figure, Ahmed Ben Brahim, head of centre-left Ettajdid (Renewal) party, has also held talk with Mr Ghannouchi - as has Mustafa Ben Jaafar of the Union of Freedom and Labour party, who afterwards called for "real reforms".

Further talks are being held on Sunday.

The exiled head of Tunisia's banned Islamist party, Rached Ghannouchi, said he would return to the country within weeks.

Speaking to the BBC in London, he said Tunisians had got rid of a dictator, but were a long way from bringing down the dictatorship.

Self-defence

On Sunday the interim authorities announced that the curfew was being eased because of the "improving security situation".

Curfew hours - which ran from 1700 (1600GMT) to 0700 (0600GMT) for two nights - will now be between 1800 and 0500.

The centre of Tunis has been sealed off by troops guarding key public buildings.

Residents in some areas have armed themselves with sticks and clubs, forming impromptu militias to protect their homes.

A resident of Nabeul, south of Tunis, Haythem Houissa, told the BBC that he had joined a volunteer group "to help clean up and guard our city".

"The security situation is much better since yesterday," he added.

Some of the recent violence has been blamed on supporters of Mr Ben Ali.

However many attacks appeared to target businesses and buildings connected with the former president and his family.

A hospital source in Tunis told AFP news agency that Imed Trabelsi, the nephew of Mr Ben Ali's powerful wife, had been stabbed to death on Saturday.

Saturday's deadliest incident was in Monastir, about 160km (100 miles) south of Tunis, where fire swept though a prison, killing at least 42 people.

The leader of neighbouring Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, praised Mr Ben Ali, whom he said he still considered the "legal president of Tunisia".

"You have suffered a great loss... There is none better than Zine (Mr Ben Ali) to govern Tunisia," he said in a speech broadcast on state television.

In the past month, protests have swept the country over unemployment, food price rises and corruption. Police used fired on protesters and dozens died.

Mr Ben Ali, who had been in power for 23 years, fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday after the unrest culminated in a giant rally against him.

ខេត្តបន្ទាយមានជ័យ ៖ យុវជនឡើង.កម្នាក់ត្រូវប៉ូលិសស្រុកអង្គរបុរី ចាប់ឃាត់ខ្លួនដោយជាប់ចោទពីបទរំលោភសេពសន្ថវៈបានសំរេចលើនារីម្នាក់មានអាយុ១៧ឆ្នាំ ។ ហេតុការណ៍នេះបានកើតឡើងកាលពីចន្លោះម៉ោង១១ ទៅម៉ោង១២យប់ថ្ងៃទី១២ មករា នៅក្នុងបរិវេណសាលាបឋមសិក្សាព្រែកសំរោង ស្ថិត ក្នុងភូមិព្រែកសំរោង ឃុំរហាត់ទឹក ស្រុកមង្គលបុរី ។ លោកវរសេនីយ៍ត្រីផុន សាលីម អធិការនគរបាលស្រុកមង្គលបុរីបានឱ្យដឹងថា ជនសង្ស័យដែលសមត្ថកិច្ចចាប់ឃាត់ខ្លួននេះឈ្មោះពៅ សំណាង ហៅហ៊ីង អាយុ១៨ឆ្នាំ នៅភូមិប្រឡាយចារ ឃុំចំណោម ស្រុកមង្គលបុរី ខេត្តបន្ទាយមានជ័យ ។ ជននេះជាប់ចោទពីបទចាប់នារីម្នាក់ អាយុ១៧ឆ្នាំ រំលោភ ។ ចំពោះការចាប់ឃាត់ខ្លួនឈ្មោះពៅ សំណាង ហៅហ៊ីងនេះគឺផ្អែកទៅលើបណ្តឹងរបស់នារីរងគ្រោះថ្ងៃទី១៤ មករា ដោយប្តឹងថា ជនជាប់ចោទបានឌុបម៉ូតូថា នាំនាងទៅផ្ទះក្នុងសភាពដែលនាងស្រវឹងស្រា តែជននេះមិននាំទៅផ្ទះទេ បែរជា
ឌុបនាងចូលក្នុងបរិវេណសាលាបឋមសិក្សាព្រែកសំរោង ហើយចាប់នាងរំលោភលើកៅអីមុខអគារសិក្សារហូតបានសំរេចទើបឌុបនាងទៅផ្ទះ ។

លោកអធិការស្រុកបានបន្តឱ្យដឹងទៀតថា តាមចំលើយរបស់ជនជាប់ចោទបានសារភាពថា មុនដំបូងរូបគេ និងបក្សពួក៤ ទៅ៥នាក់អង្គុយផឹកស៊ីនៅក្បាលស្ពានយោលក្នុងភូមិប្រឡាយចារ ។ ពេលនោះនាងរងគ្រោះ និងមិត្តភក្តិរបស់គេម្នាក់ទៀតបានមកដល់ក៏ចូលរួមផឹកជាមួយដែរ ។ ក្នុងនោះនារីរងគ្រោះមានសភាពស្រវឹងស្រាយ៉ាងខ្លាំង ខ្លួនក៏យកម៉ូតូជិះឌុបនាងមកផ្ទះ តែដោយឱកាសល្អ និងយប់ស្ងាត់ផងនោះ រូបគេក៏ឌុបនាងចូលក្នុងសាលាបឋមសិក្សាព្រែកសំរោង ចាប់នាងរំលោភសេពសន្ថវៈបានសំរេចទើបឌុបនាងទៅផ្ទះ ។ លុះវេលាម៉ោង៥ល្ងាច ថ្ងៃទី១៤ មករាស្រាប់តែប៉ូលិសមកចាប់ខ្លួនតែម្តង ។ លោកវរសេនីយ៍ត្រីផុន សាលីម បានបញ្ជាក់ថា ផ្អែកតាមបណ្តឹងជនរងគ្រោះ និងចំលើយសារភាពរបស់ជនជាប់ចោទ ឈ្មោះពៅ សំណាង ហៅហ៊ីង ត្រូវបានរៀបចំកសាងសំណុំរឿងបញ្ជូនទៅស្នងការដ្ឋាន ដើម្បីចាត់វិធានការតាមច្បាប់បន្ត ៕
